Unit 1: introduction to form perception: distinguishing figure from background is a complex visual function. Six gestalt principles: 1 figure-ground separation, the ability to distinguish an object from its background in a visual scene, ex. Grid of x and o"s: columns of same o"s belong together, 5- continuity, the ability to perceive a simple, continuous form rather than a combinations of awkward forms, ex. School of fish moving in the same direction: ex. Cow has 4 legs, goes moo, two long ears, two big eyes. Involves comparing every feature to memory: recognize what you see by analyzing individual features and comparing to similar features in memory, top-down processing, object recognition is guided by your own beliefs or expectations, ex. The cat: letters h and a look the same in the writing but the context gives it away. Theories of object recognition: object recognition can rely on carrying degrees of processing.
