The auditory system translates sound waves into audition. Back to tree example: trees make sound waves, but auditory systems make audition: sound waves don"t make sound unless auditory system is there to translate waves into audition. Unit 2: the auditory mechanisms of different species. Medium in birds longest in mammals longer = processing of wider range of frequencies. Many sound frequencies exist outside of our detectable range purity = a measure of timbre represents the complexity of a sound a combination of the fundamental frequency and overtones combined. Cochlear nerve and hair cells: inner hair cells dominate in transmitting the auditory signal to the brain each of them communicates with approx. Dr. paul faure: investigates the co evolution between bats and their prey. What he found: selective pressure between predator and prey drive each other"s evolution. Intensity differences: we have sound shadows for distant noise. Timing differences: sound cannot travel instantly. The superior olivary complex also processes intensity differences.
