Lectures 1-4: themes and research methods in developmental. Rapid development: children are interesting to study because we can watch them change over a short period of time. Different parenting bring out different children. (socially, emotionally, intellectually). Real-world applications: sometimes babies raised in ghetto areas can develop issues with cognitive development. (lead paint in cheap homes, drinking/smoking while pregnant). Poor cognitive development can lead to long-term problems. The directionality of development isn"t always adding or going forwards. The direction of development can also subtract (synaptic pruning). When our excess synapses go through synaptic pruning (less is more). Lack of pruning can lead to problems, like asd (autism spectrum. ) Continuity vs discontinuity of development: biology is a primary mechanism of development (natural rhythms [puberty] physical changes), education and social experience are other cursor of continual development (social, cognitive) Roles of nature vs nurture in development: biological vs experiential development. Epigenetic (the environment can change how our genes are expressed)
