Neural development begins in embryonic development with the development of nerve cells. During this development axons migrate and develop based on chemical markers, which tell them which direction to grow, which highways" to travel and the final destination. By the 5th month of gestation axons have reached their final destination however there is a large abundance of them. The advantage to this is that this period allows for a development of axons and allows for the axons to find their final destination however there is a very large abundance of them. The process of synaptic development increases until the age of 2 years old where at this time there are 50% more synapses than adult levels. The process of synaptic pruning begins here where the synapses decrease until the age of 16 when adult levels are reached. Advantages to this are that cells become much more specific due to synaptic pruning.
