PSYCH 2C03 Study Guide - Peer Pressure, Social Influence, Jaywalking
Document Summary
A change in behaviour/belief in accord with others. Need for acceptance and to have a group. Need social knowledge (age, experience) to know how/ why we conform. Non-conformists were ostracized from the group and thus not reproductively successful. Follow the group during a hunt, join cultural/religious traditions. Note: o = another person, a role, a norm, a group or a part of a group. The basis of this power is the ability to reward the conformist. Strength of power increases with the magnitude of rewards. Reward can be a receiving a positive thing or the removal/decrease of a negative thing. Makes the person conforming want to be closer to the o they are conforming too. If you fail to conform, you will be punished. Strength depends on the magnitude of the punishment. Punishment is receiving a negative thing or removing/decreasing a positive thing. Makes the person conforming fear/not want to be near the o they are conforming to.
