Facial/body cues to deception: avoiding eye contact, more smiling and laughing, higher rate of eye blinking, nervous fidgeting, more illustrative gestures, more movement of legs, feet, hands, more body/head movements, more shrugging. Low verbal immediacy: past tense, passive voice distances them from the events of the story. Lack of plausibility to story: raised pitch of speech. Lies have high personal relevance: stakes of deception are high (e. g. are you going to jail or not, are you going to be charged?) Combining the verbal and written story 70% accuracy in discriminating truth from lies. Fewer words, fewer money-related words, fewer words related to senses, motion, time. Fewer words related to motion, fewer i/me or he/she/him/her words. These programs are not good enough to be used reliably, too high % of false positives. Findings: overall mostly everyone is good, detecting lies: mostly everyone were accurate, detecting truth: underestimates truth telling typical of lie detecting methodology.
