Sara’s Tutorial: Guidelines for 2Q03 Final and Marking Scheme

Instructions: From the following terms, define and explain, in two-double-spaced
paragraphs or more, the significance of any four terms. The definitions need to be clear
with proper elucidation of what they signify.
Expectations: The instructions require you to do three very different tasks: DEFINE,
EXPLAIN, and provide SIGNIFICANCE. Sources are not required for this section (i.e.
DEFINE: Make a statement as to the meaning or interpretation of something, giving
sufficient detail so as to allow it to be distinguished from similar things.
EXPLAIN: Tell how things work or how they came to be the way that they are, including
perhaps some need to “describe” and to “analyze” to achieve this.
• DESCRIBE: Spell out the main aspects of an idea or topic or the sequence in
which a series of things happened.
• ANALYZE: Break an issue down into its component parts, discuss them and
show how they interrelate.
SIGNIFICANCE: Answer the following questions: why is this term or idea important in
relation to other key themes and concepts discussed in the course? What are its
implications (i.e. how does an understanding of this idea affect understandings of Islam)?
What is its relationship to other important and related ideas?
Marking: Each term will be marked out of 5. 1 mark for the definition, 2 marks for the
explanation, and 2 marks for the significance. Each term should be addressed in two
paragraphs as per the instructions. 0.5 marks will be deducted for every grammar,
spelling, and sentence structure error. In terms of clarity, if I cannot understand your
answer, your mark will suffer according to how much of your answer was

specific course content.

2. The second essay question asks you to DISCUSS a statement.
3. The third essay question requires you to COMPARE and CONTRAST.
