We define an object then determine what to do with it. Symbolic interactionism premises: human beings respond to things (objects, people, situations) on the meaning they give them. Stimulus brings a response / prompts behaviour from an individual. Symbolic interaction rejected this, because we"re not like animals who all have the same response. It"s the meaning we give to the stimulus that elicits our response, not the stimulus itself. But: stimulus to interpretation to response: we get our sense of self from how others define us (how we make sense of the world): We don"t want others to look down upon us after doing one bad thing. Looking glass self : we look back at ourselves, and define ourself using words ex. Social reaction/ label that people apply to our behaviour.
