The family structure is the most important and lasting social connection in one"s life, from childhood dependence to constructing adult-children"s consciousness (umberson, 2006, p. When children are the recipients of violent or neglectful parenting techniques, their life is forever altered. However, it is not the consequences, but rather the societal causes of childhood abuse that will be examined within this paper. Through analysis of several sociological articles and their corresponding research questions and methods, three interconnected themes emerged which can explain societal sources of child abuse: shifts within societal ideology, political- economic structures, and vulnerable populations. As mentioned, several articles will be introduced to uncover societal influence on child abuse. First, perceived instrumentality and normativeness of corporal punishment use among. Black mothers (taylor, hamvas, & paris, 2011) questions how positive communal ideas surrounding corporal punishments are maintained within southern [primarily black] neighborhoods to justify child abuse.
