How people think about their lives, issues, goals and intimate/ family relationships. Modern family has a nuclear, blended and same-sex family and involves remarriage + adoption within the families. Tv shows reflect what we see in larger society and how we actively create the relationships we want to build. People are questioning how they might be defined by their intimate relationships and family ties: unforeseen circumstances, things not of people"s choosing, there"s greater choice, opportunity for redefinition of family and parenthood. Harder for this generation to look back at previous generations because times have drastically changed, and there were less choices back then. Challenges to provide care faced by many canadian families: lone-parent, transnational, immigrant, indigenous and disabled family member or ill, aging or dying. Can be planned or unplanned transition: ex. When experiencing a new living arrangement, intimate partnership, family structure, or substantive change in new family. Transitions can shrink (empty-nesters) or expand household.
