Reasons for studying sociological theory: interpreting social conditions. Emergence of soc theory: emerged in the late 19th century grew with historical and intellectual developments. Enlightenment: period of intellectual development and change in the philosophical thinking during the 17th and 18th century. Key aspects of the enlightenment: social change reason: human ability to think about things more specifically. 1: rationality: use of reason to evaluate explanations, empiricism: use of evidence to describe and analyse phenomena. Enlightenment thinkers gave us the beginning of scientific thinking. Conservative reaction to the enlightenment: wanted social order. Didn"t like to focus on reason and rationality. Wanted to continue to emphasize religion, myth, tradition and all of the non rational ways of understanding the world. Wanted to maintain society the way it was. Contribution to conservative theory: maintain the society the way it was (social order) First to use the term sociology (social physics), wanted to model it after the natural sciences.
