If society reacts and labels you as deviant, that in itself is the deiniion of deviance because society says so. Behaviours only deviant when people label them as deviant. Members of society determine deviance and non-deviance (people in power create labels) Master status: one of the most important characterisics of a person (e. g, criminal) Primary deviance litle efect on others or yourself, did not provoke big reacion. Secondary deviance provokes reacion, people noice, geing master status. Person challenges and transforms label into something posiive (e. g, queer) In many socieies there was homo behaviour but no homosexuals. Essenialist homosexuality has always existed, inherent, always exists in same way, deined in same way (ixed, rigid deiniion) Can only have sexual relaionships with other men (can"t be just friends)
