Document Summary

Primary and secondary mechanisms that generate biological diversity. 5 major extinction events (we are the 6th omg!1!!*^%!) Its not just an exponential pattern, there have been set backs. Convergent: growing similar features because of similar climates. Major events that have influenced the direction that evolution has taken since. All environmental events would have to happen again to have the same species again, extremely unliklely. Evolution has a predictable direction, but not a predictable destination. At night they can invaginate and phagocytose, gain carbon. Gets carbon in the day through photosynthesis and at night through phagocytosis. Some nitrogen makes it to the dinoflagellate through the coral (cnidarian) Structure around the coral provides physical protection for the dinoflagellate. Coral growth is limited primarily by nutrients whos supply and retention. Evolution of sexual reproduction, various different life cycles, different ways of generating diversity. Has been transfer but its relatively small, can still discriminate fairly clearly. Secondary endosymbiosis with an ancestor to green algae.
