Because of the difference in size of gametes there are a wide range of changes related to gender specialization. Offspring energy and care requirements (egg size, post-hatching care etc) Mating system (frequency of sex, paternity uncertainty, sperm competition etc) Anisogamy produces a lot of microgametes (usually male) Causes the evolution of ways to enhance the probability of an encounter between sperm and egg. Eggs want to be fertilized by the correct sperm. Change the way the sperm swim in them due to chemotactic signals. The dialect" between sperm and eggs of a species must be unique because being fertilized by the wrong species can be a disaster for females, polyspermy (being fertilized by more than one sperm) is also usually lethal. Strongylocentrotus franciscanus (rare) and strongylocentrotus purpuratus (common) Fran is rare but purp is common, but they encounter each other"s eggs and sperm.
