knowledge.
A scientific interdisciplinary study of the mind.
An Interdisciplinary Study
- What's a mind?
- Components?
- How function to intelligent behavior?
- Difference between animals and human?
- How did it evolve to make us intelligent?
Cognition and Computation
All studies led to the hypothesis that human mind carries out a form of computation
which results in intelligent behavior and consciousness.
- These computations can be:
mathematical computation
logical reasoning
pattern matching (recognize different people)
searching and constraint satisfaction to achieve a desired goal (other ways for sth.)
- Invention of computers in 1940-50s had an enormous impact by enabling these
computations.
Processes of the Mind
- Computation: A process that manipulates a given set of data to produce some result.
- The processes of mind act on the stimuli we perceive by our senses from the
external environment or form it her processes of the mind. (What we focus on...eg:

What's COGS?
- Interdisciplinary study that attempts to explain how mind and thinking works to
produce intelligence by
Combining theories from PHIL, PSYC, NEUR, LING, ANTH and AL to explain how
mind and thinking works.
Forming new hypotheses and designing experiments and computational models
to validate the hypotheses.
applying the knowledge in advancing areas such as:
Robotics, Education, Decision support, Health and mental illness.
