In the 1880-90s, kingdom experienced civil war: king struggled with different chiefly factions for control of the centralized state, frederick lugard arrived as the representative of the imperial british east. Italian army occupied addis ababa in 1936, but never took the whole country: pockets of guerilla resistance throughout the 5 year occupation. It was a theory of colonial administration: british used indirect rule, formulated most clearly by frederick lugard- former governor of nigeria. In particular, they opposed the imposition of afrikaans as the language of instruction: the children were confronted and shot by police. In the mid-1980s a violent insurrection erupted, which would lead to virtual civil war in many areas of south africa. Ideology and movement that encourages the solidarity of africans: had important influence on the educated elite, awakened new self-confidence among people of african descent in north.
