Research has affected society in many ways: better health, physical activity, nutrition, smoking, alcohol. Research is the basis for advancing the body of knowledge of a profession: discovers correlations between two unrelated things. Builds a new set of skills- critical thinking, ability to conceptualize questions, creativity. Research is a way to gather information and make a sound decision or judgment or develop new knowledge. Two underlying factors: a structured way of answering questions, a systematic method of inquiry, finding answers to a question in a logical, orderly and systematic fashion. Research and the application of the scientific method will enable us to answer questions: knowledge is gained through experience, reasoning, and research, science is self-correcting, publishing research allows others to replicate and inspect the work. Conflict of interest: pharmaceutical companies doing research the on the drug they have created, cocoa-cola funding research on obesity. Aim for theories that attempt to bring together empirical findings into a meaningful pattern.
