Definitions of law raise more questions than answers . No one knows how exactly to define law . One has a moral responsibility to obey just laws and disobey unjust laws (mlk) A law is a law regardless of whether it is just. Law and moral are different but often related. Every exercise of power comes from war. In anglo-canadian law traced back to the great charter (magna carta) Canadian charter of rights and freedoms (1982) Rule of law is one of fundamental principles underlying system. Substantive law: rights and obligations what to do and not do. Procedural law: governs enforcements of these rights and obligations. Crimes: state vs. individual who committed a wrong. State is not absent in private law outside arbiter. Tort: wronged individual can sue the person by their choice compensation. Elements of law can be a result of historic circumstances no longer present law must change. Customs of a particular society usually transmitted orally.
