Pols 243: exam summaries: week #2: intro to ethnic conflict. Immigrant integration: not always violence, can be political disagreement. Ethnicity: sense/feeling of identity/belonging, greater/lesser extent is circumstance dependant, primarily psychological not cultural. Ethnic group: group with cultural aspects/aspects in common. Language, land, religion, music, cuisine: connection to place, even when in diaspora. In the (cid:884)(cid:882)(cid:883)6 canadian context there are two kinds of immigrants . There is very seldom conflict because: amount of immigrants is state controlled, individual decisions of immigrants spread them out, non-muslims. Difficult to mobilise: immigrants want to assimilate and only want equal treatment, muslims, tend to want certain (reasonable) accommodations: Holidays, prayer spaces, halal, right to muslim dress: often jewish people side with muslims, western society biased towards these requests. Effects of (cid:498)war on terror(cid:499: settlers vs. natives. Arrive as part of a planned project and part of a group: projects backed by state, empire, interest group.
