Document Summary

Language has semanticity, a form of communication that meanfully represents ideas events and objects. It has the property of generativity which animal communication does not, meaning that it can be used to infinitely create and describe new ideas. Perceptual skills let you perceive speech without lots of effort even though there is so much variability in language that even machine speech recognition has difficulty. Perception also varies greatly from language to language depending on what is phonemic in the language being spoken. Infants are born capable of distinguishing all different phonemes from one another. Nativism believes children are born with an innate knowledge of universal grammar. Interactionist theories view acquisition as a product of the social environment or as a learning experience guided by the infant themselves. Intelligence is measured through a cluster of traits including emotional intelligence, practical intelligence, and general intelligence.
