Document Summary

Psychology is the science of behaviour and mental processes. The philosophical view that we obtain all knowledge through observable facts and experiences. Structuralist psychologists break complex phenomena down to their smallest components and then study these components, assuming that if they understand all the parts, they will understand the whole. A scientific theory is an idea, or a conceptual model, that is designed to explain existing facts and make predictions about new facts that might be discovered. Functionalist psychologists examine behaviours, traits, and perceptions by asking, what are they for? this focus on purpose was influenced by charles darwin and evolutionary thought. A behaviour is any action that can be observed, recorded, and measured. A statement, usually designed to be tested by an experiment, that tentatively expresses a cause-and-effect relationship between two or more events. A theory is verifiable if it can be tested by others.
