Controls various muscles (e. g. leg muscles), relating motor commands from brain. Sympathetic: promotes fight of flight response, involves high arousal/alertness, mobilizes the body for rapid energy expenditure and inhibits digestion. Parasympathetic: promotes rest and digest response, enhances internal processes related to the digestion of food. Controls involuntary muscles (e. g. heart and diaphragm) and many internal organs (e. g. viscera) important in maintaining homeostasis.
