Appearance norms: rules or expectations we hold about the ways ppl are supposed to look approximating these norms is important for social acceptance: mass media promote widely held ideal appearance norms. In judging appearance, ppl look for pts of likeness & familiarity that make them feel secure also unconsciously compare others to cultural ideal. Appearance features that approximate the ideal frame what we consider appearance norms ideal features important bc everyone wants to be admired & accepted: most prefer ppl who approximate these appearance expectations. Meeting appearance norms is getting harder (since the 1950s) ideal women have become thinner than the avg for real ppl body sizes of avg young north american women & men have increased a lot (increasingly deviated from ideal) Inconsistencies b/w actual bodies & ideal bodies may account for increased body dissatisfaction eating disorders are one result. Merton"s anomie theory gap b/w cultural ideals & real-world possibilities can have at least 2 results:
