For example, one change in the code could change a bear"s fur colour. This mutation gets replicated, and creates a new fur colour for bears. This is how new species are created - evolution by natural selection. Darwin"s theory is based on the notion of variation. It argues that the numerous traits and adaptations that differentiate species from each other also explains how species evolved over time and gradually diverged. Heredity is the mechanism that perpetuates variation, as traits are passed on from parents to offspring. There are many wondrous adaptations that have allowed species to survive in their natural environments. The beak allows the woodpecker to gather insects, wings allow bats to fly, and paddles allow the porpoise to swim.
