Document Summary

Organism: a life form; a living entity made up of one or more cells. Since there is dimple definition for life shared by all biologists, most agree that organisms share. The cell theory emerged when robert hooke used a crude microscope (magnified about 30x30 times its normal size) to examine a cork (bark tissue): he discovered small, pore-like compartments (cells). Soon after, anton van leeuwenhoek developed a much more powerful microscope (300x): he inspected pond water and made the first observation of human blood cells and of sperm cells. After this, a researcher studying plants concluded that they were composed of many individual cells. Bacteria (smallest organism known today) is tiny compared to sequoia trees, however both are composed of cells: bacteria consists of single cell; sequoias are made of many. Cell: highly organized compartment bounded by a plasma membrane; contains concentrated chemicals in an aqueous solution: chemical reactions that sustain life occur within the cell.
