Document Summary

Chapter 26- fluid, electrolyte and acid- base balance. Body fluids: list the factors that determine body water content and describe the effect of each factor. Water occupies 2 main fluid compartments within the body. Extracellular fluid compartment- remaining one third or so of body water is outside cells: divided into 2 subcompartments. Interstitial fluid the fluid in the microscopic spaces between tissue cells. Water is a universal solvent in which a variety of solutes are dissolved. Nonelectrolytes: have bonds (usually covalent bonds) that prevent them from dissociating in solution, no electrically charged species are created when nonelectrolytes are dissolved in water most are organic molecules glucose, lipids, creatinine, and urea. Electrolytes: chemical compounds that do dissociate into ions in water. Ions are charged particles, thus they can conduct an electrical current. Include inorganic salts; both inorganic and organic acids and bases and some proteins: have much greater osmotic power than nonelectrolytes because each electrolyte dissociates into at least 2 ions.
