Subarctic climate longer and colder winters; shorter and cooler summers. Not good for agriculture b/c of climate, soils and physiography. Canadian shield rugged, rocky; has low elevations: does not allow hydroelectric power developments. Hudson bay lowlands poorly drained plain + muskeg and permafrost: few opportunities for resource development, area for hunting and trapping. Its development is dependent on forestry, tourism, mining. Matches the geographic extent of the great lakes- st. lawrence. Moderate continental climate long, hot, humid summers: short, cold winters, cool springs. Tropical air masses resulting in hot and humid weather. Proximity to the great lakes affect the weather by funneling air masses into the region.
