Document Summary

Nature of organizations - tells the way in which employees are organized. Divisions and groups are referred to as the nature of the organizational structure. The classic structure (hierarchy) has been found in the church, government, militant organizations. The hierarchy starts with a leader at the top. Then the team below them is responsible for different departments and reports (ie. president > vice presidents of marketing, finance, sales) Depending on how much work is required, the structure is either larger and more complex or smaller and less complicated. Downfall to hierarchy: rigid ignores local sensitivities. Flatten/flatter: reduce the number of managerial layers involves increased empowerment of individual employees to understand or apply organizational priorities in the field. Seen in professional organizations, accounting firms, law firms. Only practical in some environments, not all industries, especially where less skilled labour, health and safety challenges, or other factors require structure and support where they exist.
