Why are legal issues in nursing more important now than in the past: consumer and patient"s rights movements. Established to protect the public/patients" rights (advocate for patients) Sets legal boundaries of job e. g. puncturing trachea. Protects self from liability e. g. np liable even if dr. asks np to prescribe: governs standards of care and nursing practice acts. Examples: nursing act and the regulated health professionals act. Based on the r. h. p. a & nursing act, the legal responsibilities of a nurse. To provide a reasonable standard of nursing care to patients or clients. To be competent in their practice (e. g. chemotherapy is an added nursing skill according to hospital policy) and knowledgeable about the profession (e. g. safe and competent even if floating to a different nursing unit)
