Starting with accident theory, then making our way through legislation and management principles, we will describe in detail the components that make up a comprehensive occupational health and safety (ohs) management system. We will discuss the concepts of the internal responsibility system, due diligence and. Duties in more detail in unit 2 of the course textbook. These are common principles to occupational health and safety legislation across canada and in other countries. An interesting change in ontario law occurred in 1990. Senior management of a company could no longer invoke the weasel clause and say the plant manager was solely responsible for safety. They were given a personal duty to ensure their company complied with the occupational health and safety act and regulations. Realistically senior managers will not likely be on the shop floor every day, so they need to install a management system to ensure compliance.
