Chapter 1:
defining of social psychology: the scientific study of how individuals think, feel, behave in a
social context!
-scientific study applies scientific method or systemic observation !
-social psy concerns people’s private, non-conscious beliefs, attitudes and their most
passionate emotions
-emphasis on social nature of individuals
what is social psy?
-individuals in the social world !
-humans need social interaction in order to survive !
-social characteristics evolve in order to better ourselves — we do things for a reason !
-you need to put yourself in someone else’s position in order to see it from their perspective!
-“we are the sum of our experiences” !
What social psy ISN’T:
- common sense
The power of the situation:
-we act due to the situations we are in or the sum of situations we have experiences !
-appreciating the environment and how they shape our behaviour !
Schema: knowledge based on judgement !
-classifying anything within a certain category based on appearance or stereotype
-in and of themselves are not bad because it is easier for interactions !
-they are adaptive !
confederates: people who are in on the study and act as if they are not !
Bridge study:
-all emotions give the same physiological arousal !
-the arousal giving by the scary bridge attributed it to the attraction from the lady !
-physiological arousal = attraction to the lady present — men were scared but attributed this
arousal to being attracted to the lady !
History of social psychology:
-a lot of topics are motivated by real life !
social context:
-social contexts we are in can influence ourselves profoundly !
-social psychologist pursuit the thoughts feelings and behaviours of either (a) concern other
people or (b) are influenced by other people !
the power of the social context:
-research has shown that students from unrepresented backgrounds, minority groups or
women entering school specializing in sciences interfere with their academic performance —
feel they don’t belong !

-sociology: tends to focus on the group level!
-social physiology: tends to focus on the individual level !

1880’s- 1920’s
-founder has pointed to the American psychologist Norman Triplett!
1930’s-1950’s:
-Adolf Hitler had the most influence on social psychology !
-Kurt Lewin: established that behaviour is a function of interaction!
-interactionist perspective: an emphasis on how both an individual’s personality and
environmental characteristics influence behaviour !
Confidence and crisis: 1960’s- mid 1970s:
-Stanely Milgrams research in the early and middle 1960’s linked the post world war 2 era
with the coming era of social revolution !
-demonstrated how people failed to help others in distress
An Era of Pluralism: Mod 1970’s- 2000s:
- social cognition: the study of how people perceive, remember and interpret information
about themselves and others !
Behavioural genetics: a subfield of psychology that examines the role of genetic factors in
behaviour !
evolutional psychology: a subfield of psychology that uses the principles of evolution to
understand human social behaviour
culture: a system of enduring morals, beliefs, values assumptions, institutions and practices
shared by a large group of people and transmitted from one generation to another !
cross-culture research: research designed to compare and contrast people of dierent
cultures !
multicultural research: research designed to examine racial and ethnic groups within cultures !
behavioural economics: an interdisciplinary subfield that focuses on how psychology-
particularly social and cognitive psychology relates to economic decision making !
social neuroscience: the study of the relationship between unreal and social processes !
embodied cognition: an interdisciplinary subfield that examines the close links between our
minds and the positioning, experiences and actions of our bodies !
