Instinct: inborn complex pattern of behaviour (normally exists in every member of the species, cannot be overcome by force of will) Different fr/ a reflex- response to stimulus. Focusing on biology alone for an answer is not sufficient. Human behaviour is the result of a complex interplay of biological elements and social learning. Social inequality is based on underlying biological differences. Used wrong: theorists concluded that those in pwr were meant to be there b/c they were the most fit to be there (laws of nature, things were meant to be this way) E. g in lord of the flies, the boys" true beastial and predatory nature comes out. Human behaviour, anatomy, etc. determined by genetics. Traits are heritable but can be affected by one"s environment. Nature and nurture make us who we are. Through living together, humans determine means for survival, develop technologies and institutions, communicate and develop rules for social behaviour, values, norms and beliefs culture.
