There are quite a few problems viewing power as a commodity. It creates binary oppositional categories, no allowance for differences and it can be contradicting. A better way to understand power is to recognize power is not possessed but. It does that by bringing conflict into focus. That shows that power also implies resistance and fluctuates within a community. Power is also used to gain support and protect certain interest. The more common bases of power someone has the more they are perceived to have power. Some examples of common bases of power are money, education, law, personality, occupation, etc. There are many ways to use common base of power within a group such as rewards, punishment, legitimate, and referent.
