Splanchnocranium: framework for the jaws and gill arches. Rostrum: pointed snout at the anterior end. (anterior projection of the chondrocranium). Has precerebral cavity that holds a gelatinous material. Two large apperatures at the base are the rostral fenestrae. This tapered tip at the anterior end helps overcome water resistance in swimming. Basal plate: expanded posterior part of the chondrocranium extending back from the infraorbital shelf (bottom of brain case) Olfactory capsules: rounded swellings located on either side of the base of the rostrum. Orbit: located on both sides of the chondocranium the cavity which eyes are located. Otic capsules: irregularly shaped masses protecting the inner ear, fused posteriorly to the chondocranium. Vertebral column: consists of two types of vertebrae: Neural arch: a structure arising dorsally from a vertebral centrum and enclosing the spinalcord. Centrum (notochord): biconcave, provides support/rigidity, part of spinal cord precursor. Hemal canal: bony arches on the ventral side form the hemal arch.
