Lecture 1
- what is sociology?
• 1- social relations - the way that individuals and groups relate to each other
governed and controlled by law and but he criminal justice system
• 2- Social forces - shape our political system, our social, laws, our criminal justice
system
• 3- social conduct - how we behave or conduct ourselves in our social relations
• 4- social conventions - norms and expectations, of the society what people expect
we will do, what they expect we wont do, some social conventions are informed,
that you don't slam the door on somebody face, some are informal, some formal.
• 5 - social constraints - can be formal or informal. informal constraints (rejection,
shunning, or exclusion) formal social constraints ( law, courts, police, prison)
• 6 - Social institutions - largely modern creations, not much education 300 years
ago, no criminal justice system 300 years ago, no central revenue agency 300
years ago. designed to constrain those who do not follow social conventions
- is sociology really a science?
- sociology involves scientific principle
- involves a respect for clarity in the formulation of theories, and also involves
disciplined empirical investigation

- theory - explain why things happen, to help us make sense out of facts, take
facts put them together to get a clear explanation, abstract interpretations of
empirical situations
- Studying humans and social behaviour is different than studying atoms, minerals,
chemicals or plant life.
- humans may be uncooperative, or may consciously alter their behaviour when being
studied or observed
- human behaviour can be quite complex, so clear cut cause effect relationships
maybe difficult to pin down.
