LECTURE 1: CHAPTER 1-INTRODUCTION
Politics:
- Activities that involve the governance of a political community/country. Specifically,
by influencing, implementing and making critical decisions.
- In politics, POWER is the central.
Power:
- This is the ability to control or influence the behaviors of people in order to achieve
your goals.
- It is stogly used to get people to do thig they ould’t do otheise.
- Power is being exercised in four ways: coercion, inducements, persuasion &
leadership.
Coercion:
-This involves the use of threats of dangerous consequences and fears to force
others to act in a certain way to achieve your goals.
-This is a way that authorities use their power.
Inducements:
-This is when the authorities use the method of bribing or giving rewards to
obtain their ultimate goals.
-This is a way that authorities use their power.
Persuasion:
-When the authorities use the method of convincing or persuading other people
to act or behave in their favors in order to achieve their goals.
-This is a way that authorities use their power.
Leadership:
-This is when the authorities are being great and trustful leaders so that they can
gain the support and trust of the political community.
-It is also a good way to prove the legitimacy of a country.
-This is a way that authorities use their power.
Political Agenda:
- This is when the issues are being viewed as very important; therefore, in political
deliberations, they have the rights to be discussed and debated on first.
- Political agenda is also ko as “politis’ pioity list-which means issues that have
the most attention from the government will be on the list.

Authority:
- This is the right of a person to use and exercise power and this is strongly depended
on legitimacy.
- There are three types of authority: Charismatic authority, traditional authority and
legal-rational authority
- With legitimacy, the use of power will be approved.
Charismatic authority:
-This is aily ased o the leade’s pesoal haateistis ad ualities.
-It could include having extraordinary or supernatural qualities
-Example: Mao Zedong-leader of the Chinese communist revolution
Traditional Authority:
-This is when the power of a leader is exercised through a set of customs, rules,
traditional practices and beliefs and evil will come if violated
-Also, it based on customs that determine the right of a person to take control.
Example: The Japanese Emperors- who claimed that they are the descendants of
the sun goddess.
Legal-rational Authority:
-This is the authority to exercise power is closely tied to legal rules, procedures
or legal documents.
-The leader is expected to rule according to a set of procedures.
-Example: Prime Ministers or Presidents.
Legitimacy:
- Having legitimacy means that the ruler obtains the approval to make decisions for
the political community given the people (the ones being governed)
- Legitimacy is very important because it reduces and minimizes reliance and
coercion.
LEGITIMACY IS MAINTAINED BY CHARISMATIC, TRADITIONAL AND LEGAL-
RATIONAL AUTHORITIES.
Common good:
- It is the goods that the government and the political community set as goals to work
towards to satisfy the needs of everyone.
- In another word, the everyone in the nation works for the common good.
Individualist perspective:
- In politics- this refers to the perspective that human beings only focus on working
towards their own interests and act in accordance to them.
Communitarian perspective:
- This is the opposite of individualist perspective.
