POL 101W Study Guide - Final Guide: Nationstates, Security Dilemma, International Non-Governmental Organization
Document Summary
Anarchy: a state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority. Global governance: a process whereby a number of different actors compete and co-operate to provide a certain degree of order and predictability among states. Realism: assumes that because the international system is anarchic, security is the major preoccupation of states. The pursuit of the national interest (reason of state, protection of state sovereignty) is a central feature of foreign policy. Peace rests primarily on deterrence, and the possibility of international governance is limited because states are reluctant to put constraints on their sovereignty. Believes peace can be attained only through strength, make war too costly for would-be aggressors to choose. Liberal-internationalism: assumes that increased interdependence is leading to the emergence of a global civil society in which co-operation, the rule of law, and peace are valued, and global governance is spreading. States are a network of different actors each with different interests.
