Materialist values: stress importance of economic growth, physical security, and order. Postmaterialist values: stress importance of freedom of expression, participation, concern about quality of life, and appreciation of a more beautiful environment. Scarcity: people place greatest subjective value on things that are in relative short supply. Socialization hypothesis: people"s basic values reflect the conditions that prevail during their pre-adult years.
