Two challenges inevitably faced by historians of psychology are selectivity and presentism. Describe these challenges and give two examples of each (i. e. , two for presentism and two for selectivity) from the 308 course so far. Be sure to explain exactly why each of your examples is an example of either presentism or selectivity. Presentism refers to the tendency to interpret the past in terms of current standards, conventions, and rules of conduct, understanding, and so forth. Historians of psychology seek to avoid presentism in their work because they consider it a form of cultural bias, and believe it creates a distorted understanding of their subject matter. Nicholson (2011) criticised milgram"s experiment as malicious by claiming that the experiment did not properly debrief participants, and misrepresented its risk and the harm that might possibly impose on the participants. Indeed, milgram"s experiment has long been criticised due to its ethical issues.
