A patient has had a stroke that impaired function of their prefrontal cortex. To test the phonological loop, i would use a digit span test. For this test you would need to read a list of seven numbers, you"d then look away from the numbers and then have to repeat them (this same test can be done with words). If you were unable to retrieve the numbers, the phonological loop would be damaged. This component of memory is maintained by internal speech rehearsal. To test the sketchpad, i would use the delayed nonmatch-to-sample task. This task shows you an object, like a blue water bottle. Then the screen will go black, after a period of time a red water bottle will be added. You would need to select the red water bottle, since it is not the same as the original object. The sketchpad uses someone"s visual imagination and holds onto visual and spatial information.
