Closed system: energy is exchanged with the outside environment, while matter is not. Open system: both matter and energy are exchanged with the outside environment. Perturbations: a disturbance produced by force (can be natural caused or human caused) Examples: landslide by creek; slow orbit around sun; development of agriculture; earthquake. Linear responses- the magnitude of the response is proportionate to the perturbation. Non-linear responses- the magnitude of the response is not proportionate to the perturbation. Natural resource: material or substances such as minerals, forest, water and fertile land that occurs in nature and can be used for economic gain. Surveyed and can be exploited in the future: stock. Not surveyed, but can possibly be accessible. Non-renewable: forms slowly or do not form naturally. Exhaustible: finite and can deplete if not managed properly. Inexhaustible: unaffected by human use, and will not run out. Time (available time) = quantity of reserve / production rate.
