Document Summary

Exam review jami cernele april 20th 2016. Null hypothesis: the motorway has no effect on metal contents of the soil and vegetation. Alternate hypothesis: the motorway has an effect on metal content of the soil and vegetation. Types of sampling: random, systematic, stratified and judgemental. Example of systematic sampling: sample at 5 or 10 meter intervals from motorway perimeter into the farmland for a distance of 100-200 meters, surface and 20 cm depth. Preservation and handling when sampling: goal is to ensure that there are no changes in analyte during sample transfer from collection to analysis no quantitative or qualitative changes through microbial action, sample decomposition, ph, redo potential, sedimentation. Subsampling: goal is to obtain representative sample when sample size is too large. It"s simple when entire sample can be homogenized (process that makes a mixture of two mutually non-soluble liquids the same throughout). Special care is required for samples that can"t be homogenized.
