Sociology is a way of knowing, not a concrete body of knowledge. Other ways of knowing are direct knowledge, convenional wisdom, aestheics/arts, religious knowledge. Look under the surface (a broader look at the world) We are social beings and live in a social world. All sociological inquiries are based on the discerning and explaining the paterns that underlie the social life: assumpion that there are social paterns. The way which humans interact socially in a paterned or regular way: assumpion that all human life is social life, no one can exist outside the social world. Founding fathers: max weber, karl marx, emile durkhiem (suicide study) Suggested that you can look at suicide using sociology (broad picture), considered 1st sociology study. How socially integrated a person was related to suicide. Comparaive approach= look at our society and compare to other socieies (either historically or cross-culturally) Premises of science: empirical, logical and raional, objecive, informaion is systemaically, skepical, knowledge is cumulaive.
