Document Summary

Population: individuals of the same species that co-occur in space and time together/ a group of individuals of a single species inhabiting a specific area. Distribution: size, shape and location of area occupied. Organism lower down to food web have higher density. Other characteristics (age distributions, sex ratios, birth and death rates, immigration and emigration rates, rates of growth) Absolute density: the number of individuals of a population per unit area ex: moose per hectare. Ecological density: the number of individuals of a population per unit area suitable habitat ex: moose per hectare forest (area that moose actually live in) The geographic distribution of a species is limited by the physical environment. A species can only exist in areas where its niche requirements are fulfilled. Why aren"t all species in all the places: all organisms have limited energy and resources. They will have to specialized to live in area that is best for them.
