Accidents at school fall under tort law. Tort law a wrong committed by one person against another. Breach of care must be the proximate cause (direct) of the damages in order for liability to ensue. School policies must be in place to ensure student safety in: Classroom and playgrounds, before and after school, bullying, shop, science labs, and sports, and emergencies. Must adopt preventative measures in order to minimize student risk. Any suits of negligence must be backed by supervision on the side of the teacher. Duty of care to take reasonable steps to minimize the risk of injury. Take reasonable measures to avoid causing others harm. Does not require a person to take steps to eliminate the possibility of harm, only. Duty exists inside and outside of classroom. Varies according to circumstance-reasonable action is established by court. Expected from teachers is that same as careful parent.
