Otitis externa outer ear infection (hurts when palpated) Rub one ear and whisper in the other ear check for hearing. Activate by holding handle and hit anywhere on body. When it starts vibrating, place on top of the head and check to see if patient can hear equal vibration in both ears. Ac should be twice as long as bc, if not, there is conductive hearing loss. Hold like a pencil, and brace with other hand. Pull ear up and back to straighten ear canal. Look for the tympanic membrane, should be purple-greyish colour red colour membrane is bad. Inspect for colour (jaundice, blue sclera), discharge, opacity. Check conjunctiva (pull eyes down, move eyeball up) Cover one eye and read the smallest line they see from 20 feet away. 20/30 top # is distance (20 ft. ) and bottom # is for the population (general population can see from 30 ft. ) bigger # on bottom is worse vision.
