Concerned with prevention of disease and relief of unwanted symptoms. Types : pharmacotherapy, psychology, yoga, massage, acupuncture, pt, ot, chiropractors. Pharmacotherapeutics : use of agents for a therapeutic effect. 3 categories: drugs / medicine : chemical agents (can be from the lab or nature) Often naturally found in nature, and then reproduced in the lab: biologics : naturally produced in animal cells. Ie. hormones (estrogen, insulin), antibodies (vaccines), blood products, genetic treatment modalities: natural health products : naturally occurring, used as an adjunct. Mostly bought over the counter, without a prescription. Very few have been proven to be extremely effective - don"t know how much of the chemical agent that causes therapy is in the product. Regulated, body looks to see if the product is okay to sell, not who uses it. 1800"s : with the improvement in chemistry we were able to isolate the active substance. Morphine was activated as the active substance in poppy seeds in 1805.
