REN R483 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Drilling Fluid, Produced Water, Drill Cuttings
Document Summary
Reservoirs produce a fluid mixture that contains: crude oil, gases, produced water. Developing petroleum resources produces wastes along the way. Oilfield waste: solid or liquid material intended to be treated and disposed of. Results from construction, operation or reclamation of a well site, oil and gas battery, gas plant, compressor station, crude oil terminal, pipeline, gas gathering system, heavy oil site, oil sands site/related facility. Contaminated soil becomes a waste once excavated: drilling waste + production wastes managed differently. Unrefined + refined hcs (compressor oil, spent chemicals) As drilling progresses, mud with chemical additives circulated through pipe to float rock cuttings out of the hole. New sections of drill pipe added as hole deepens. Drilling mud: suspension (in water or oil) of clay and chemical additives introduced down drill pipe under pressure and out through openings in drill bit. Sump: tank or surface excavation for holding water, drilling mud & cuttings.
