Chapter 11: political organization and the maintenance of order. Band: a small group of related households occupy a particular region who gather periodically but do not yield their sovereignty to the larger collective. They are found among foragers, hunters, and other nomadic groups. They organize themselves into politically autonomous extended-family groups. They will camp together, although they often split into smaller groups for periods to forage for food or visit others. The band is the oldest form of political organization, since all humans once were hunters and gatherers. Decisions affecting a band are made with the participation of all adult members, with an emphasis on achieving consensus (a general agreement among adult members of a group) Leadership is based on ability, and leaders maintain their position only as long as they retain the (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)u(cid:374)ity"s (cid:272)o(cid:374)fide(cid:374)(cid:272)e: tribe organization. Tribe: a group of nominally independent communities occupying a specific region and sharing a common language and culture integrated by some unifying factor.
