Two sets of lenses (oculars and objective) Dark specimen on a light coloured background. Prokaryote - do not contain any organelles. Heterocysts (smaller circles) - nitrogen xing cells. Akinetes - (larger than heterocysts) - protect organism during periods of drought or freezing. Eukaryote - visible membrane-bound organelles, nucleus present. Dark red spot in the middle - stigma - allows them to sense light. Paramylon granules - storage polymer similar to starch - reddish-brown granules. Two types: lamentous molds or unicellular yeast. Dimorphic - cause human disease; exist as yeast in the body, mold in environment. Yeast cells reproduce by budding - penicillium. Facultative anaerobe - can grow in the presence of or absence of oxygen. Colony - a lone circle that arose from a single cell or spore.
